Water pipesAlyssa Milano’s known for many things — working as a child in the hit sitcom Who’s the Boss, co-starring in 1996′s instant horror classic Fear, playing Phoebe in the series Charmed for eight years, speaking out for animal-rights activist group PETA — but not necessarily as one of the greatest thinkers of our time. That’s why we thought it was more than a little funny when Milano recently tweeted this article about water quality from a recent issue of Scientific American.

Considering the sheer volume of recent studies revealing the high quality of America’s drinking water and the hundreds of annual municipal water supply reports showing water that passes with flying colors, we here at Quench aren’t ready to give up on tap water quite yet. One thing our sixteen years of experience providing office water solutions to businesses has taught us is: If the water tastes funny, you might need to check the pipes. Especially in major urban areas, well-established communities and older buildings.

According to a recent report released by the EPA, America’s drinking water distribution systems are designed to last anywhere between sixty and ninety-five years. This can become a problem considering that most of the country’s drinking water infrastructure has been around for longer than eighty years.  With more than 700,000 miles of pipe, maintenance is no easy feat.

Since the water infrastructure is only growing older and more underfunded, what’s the average water-drinking citizen to do? You could spend tons of money and create tons of waste by buying bottled water, or you can simply affix a special, inexpensive filter to your faucet or water system. Even better, if you already are one of the water-bottle-buying public, consider switching to a bottled water alternative. Carry your own refillable bottle when you’re on the go and have a bottleless water cooler installed at your workplace. Not only will you be making the best use of your preexisting water supply, you’ll also help cut down on plastic waste and the energy used to create it.

Some parts of the country have exceptional drinking water coming out of their tap, but you would never know it because old, poorly maintained pipes transport it. Trust us, bottleless is all we do and we do it nationwide. It’s our job to know the local water conditions in cities all over the country and we customize our solutions based on our experience with the water in those areas.

A perfect case in point is in New York City, where old buildings — and even older water distribution systems — have been known to release enough sediment to make high quality drinking water taste, well, a bit “off.” So Quench provides a customized filtration solution in the Big Apple that takes care of those extra particles while still getting rid of the contaminants our other filters screen out.

So, start spreading the news: sometimes it’s not the water but the pipes that degrade your water quality. A good water filtration company can take care of those issues as long as they’re not giving their customers a “one-size-fits-all” product.
